What are mirror wills?
Two separate wills, one for each partner, that match each other. Each leaves everything to the other, and both name the same backup plan for your children and other beneficiaries. They're also called reciprocal wills.
Is a mirror will the same as a joint will?
No. A joint will is a single document signed by both of you, and it can be hard to change after one of you dies. Mirror wills are two independent wills, and either of you can change your own at any time.
Is the will legally valid?
It becomes your will once you print it and sign it in front of two adult witnesses who don't inherit under it and aren't the spouse or partner of anyone who does, following the steps we give you. Farwell isn't a law firm and doesn't give legal advice, so have a lawyer review it if you have a blended family, a beneficiary with a disability, a business, or property in more than one country.
Where can I use it?
Every Canadian province and territory except Quebec, and every U.S. state except Louisiana. Quebec and Louisiana use civil-law systems with their own formalities, so see a notary or lawyer there.
